AI Accelerates Discovery of Thermostable mRNA–Lipid Nanoparticle Vaccines
Published in Artificial Intelligence, Drugs development & discovery, Nanomedicine.
Researchers have introduced AGENT (Algorithm-Guided Experimental design for lipid Nanoparticle Thermostabilization), an AI-driven framework designed to optimize thermostable mRNA–lipid nanoparticle formulations.
The system combines high-throughput experimentation with Bayesian optimization to learn efficiently from relatively small experimental datasets. In the study, optimization was completed in six iterative rounds over about one month.
The work addresses a major limitation of mRNA therapeutics and vaccines: dependence on cold-chain storage. More stable solid-state formulations could simplify distribution and support new delivery formats such as microneedle patches.
Why it matters
This research is a strong example of artificial intelligence being used not only to identify drug candidates, but also to optimize the physical formulation and delivery of advanced medicines at the nanoscale.
