ARPA-H Launches SURPASS to Build Faster, AI-Enabled Adaptive Clinical Trials

Published in Artificial Intelligence, Drugs development & discovery, Tools.

The U.S. Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) has launched SURPASS, a program designed to modernize clinical trials using predictive computational models, real-time analysis, shared trial infrastructure and automation.

SURPASS stands for Simulation-augmented, Real-time Platform Adaptive Seamless Trials. The goal is to move away from rigid, sequential trial phases toward adaptive platforms that can learn from accumulating data and modify trial operations more quickly.

How AI and simulation could change clinical trials

The program includes work on digital twins and other predictive models for trial design, continuous statistical inference for faster decisions, and an agentic operations layer intended to automate parts of trial startup, data collection and data cleaning.

If successful, the approach could reduce development time, cost and patient burden while allowing promising drugs and biologics to be evaluated more efficiently.
