HeartBeam receives Breakthrough Device designation for heart attack assessment research

Published in Tools.

On October 5, 2026, HeartBeam announced that the FDA granted Breakthrough Device Designation for its system under development to help physicians assess possible heart attacks outside the hospital.

The technology records cardiac electrical signals in three directions and can synthesize a visual 12-lead ECG representation. HeartBeam says the designation was supported by proof-of-concept work and findings from its 134-patient ALIGN-ACS pilot study.

The company plans to seek FDA agreement on a multicenter pivotal study before pursuing an expanded indication. Breakthrough designation supports closer regulatory interaction; it does not authorize the proposed heart attack assessment use.

HeartBeam’s existing clearances concern arrhythmia assessment. Its current indications explicitly exclude myocardial infarction and ischemia assessment, and the software does not conduct cardiac analysis. The announcement should therefore be read as a development milestone, without assuming proven at-home heart attack detection or guaranteed future clearance.
