UVM Receives Up to $38 Million to Develop AI Digital Twins for Critical Care

Published in Artificial Intelligence, Immunology, Personalized medicine, Tools.

The University of Vermont announced on September 30, 2026 that Gary An’s team received an ARPA-H research and development contract worth up to $38 million for ReSCUED, a project to build digital twins for critically ill patients.

The proposed models would combine molecular measurements and physiological monitoring to represent a patient’s changing immune response. Researchers plan to simulate treatment strategies using existing FDA-approved medications before clinicians administer them. Severe trauma, burns and sepsis are among the conditions the project targets.

This is a development program, not an established bedside treatment. The initiative may run for five years and depends on milestones: initial model development and computational validation would precede later experimental work and clinical trials.

Reducing ICU stays by at least 25% is an aspiration described by the university, not a demonstrated outcome. The project’s value will depend on whether its predictions remain accurate and useful in real clinical settings.
