BioRender Launches Leo AI Agent for Editable Scientific Figures

Published in Artificial Intelligence, Tools.

October 6, 2026 — Toronto-based BioRender announced Leo, an AI assistant for planning and building scientific figures. The launch targets biological research communication, where labels, relationships and visual details must remain accurate and understandable.

According to BioRender, Leo first asks researchers about the figure’s audience and purpose, then produces a rough sketch for approval. After that review, it builds the figure on the BioRender canvas. Labels, arrows, icons and shapes remain separate editable objects, allowing researchers to correct individual elements manually.

This workflow could be useful for explaining experimental designs or biological mechanisms while preserving control over the finished illustration. Scientific review remains essential: a clear, editable image does not establish that its depicted mechanism or conclusion is correct.

The announcement describes product capabilities and expected communication benefits. It does not present an independent evaluation showing improved scientific accuracy or research outcomes.
