UVA Highlights Focused Ultrasound and Nanoparticles for Brain Gene-Therapy Delivery

Published in Brain/Neurology, Drugs development & discovery, Nanomedicine.

Published October 6, 2026. Source announcement date: October 5, 2026.

UVA Health highlighted a series of research papers investigating focused ultrasound as a way to deliver therapies across the blood-brain barrier. Its researchers are exploring non-viral polymer and lipid nanoparticles alongside viral delivery approaches.

The announcement describes work on polymer nanoparticles intended to stimulate immune responses against gliomas and lipid nanoparticles intended to augment chemotherapy. Researchers also reported opportunities to target tumor endothelial cells using modified polymer nanoparticles and focused ultrasound.

Non-viral carriers may offer advantages for repeated administration and help address challenges associated with viral delivery, including immune responses and manufacturing. Those possibilities remain research goals. UVA stresses that further study is needed before these approaches could become treatments available to patients; the announcement does not establish clinical efficacy against Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or brain tumors.
