Danaher announced plans on October 7 for its first AI-powered autonomous laboratory, expected to operate at scale in early 2027. Based at Abcam, the lab will develop custom antibodies and other affinity reagents used as molecular research tools.
The proposed workflow connects AI design with robotic construction and experimental testing. Results feed back into the model to guide subsequent designs, while scientists retain responsibility for key decisions.
Technologies from Beckman Coulter Life Sciences, Cytiva, Genedata, Integrated DNA Technologies and Molecular Devices will contribute to the system. Automata is collaborating on robotic automation and device orchestration.
Danaher says the laboratory is designed for up to eightfold faster progress to validated reagents and up to tenfold greater annual reagent generation as it scales. These are company-stated performance targets; the announcement does not provide independent comparative validation. The project concerns research reagents and laboratory productivity, rather than evidence that a new medicine is clinically effective.
