Terumo announced the global commercial launch of its K-Pack Embrace active safety needle on October 6. The device combines an injection needle, a hinged safety shield and a rigid protective container designed for automated packaging alongside a medicine and syringe.
The 25-gauge needle comes in 16 mm and 25 mm lengths. Terumo states that it is compatible with ISO 80369-7 male connectors and intended for subcutaneous, intramuscular and intravenous applications.
The shield can be activated with one hand and provides audible, visual and tactile confirmation when engaged. A tamper-evident, color-coded label carries a two-dimensional identification barcode intended to support automated visual inspection during packaging.
The launch concerns an injection and packaging tool. Terumo presents the shield as a way to reduce needlestick injury risk, but the announcement provides no comparative clinical injury-rate data. Local availability and product-specific use requirements should be checked separately.
