GeneDx announced findings for the October 7–8 ICoNS meeting in Boston from genomic newborn screening programs. GUARDIAN has enrolled 30,000 newborns, with 72.3% of approached families participating and 76% of participants having non-European genetic ancestry, according to the company.
Excluding G6PD deficiency, screen-positive rates were relatively consistent across ancestry groups. Genomic screening found conditions missed by conventional screening, while conventional screening also detected cases missed by genomic testing. These observations support complementary use rather than replacement.
Among infants identified with Long QT syndrome, eight began beta-blocker treatment. Family testing led six parents and one older sibling to begin preventive treatment as well.
The NIH-funded BRIDGES-NBS program plans to start enrollment this month with 746 genes covering 777 conditions treatable in the first year of life. These are company-reported research and conference findings; the announcement does not establish universal implementation or a proven population-wide survival benefit.
