Repligen Completes BioLife Solutions Acquisition, Adding Cryopreservation Media

Repligen announced on October 6 that it had completed its previously disclosed acquisition of BioLife Solutions, bringing cell-processing tools and biopreservation media into its bioprocessing business.

BioLife’s portfolio includes CryoStor, a family of media used to preserve cells within cell-therapy manufacturing and supply workflows. According to Repligen, its biopreservation media support 18 commercially approved therapies and the majority of commercially sponsored U.S. cell-based therapy trials. Those figures describe adoption, rather than a new comparative performance study.

The companies expect their combined commercial reach to support customers across more stages of cell-therapy development and manufacturing. Repligen also identifies expanded access in Asia Pacific as a potential benefit. These integration benefits remain company expectations.

The transaction gave BioLife shareholders $11.25 in cash and 0.1442 Repligen shares per BioLife share, with cash replacing fractional shares.

For cryopreservation research, the news concerns ownership of established tools and their commercial distribution. It does not demonstrate a new freezing protocol, successful preservation of whole human bodies or reversal of cryopreservation damage. No new experimental cryopreservation results were reported in the closing announcement.
