Verana and Bitfount combine imaging and health records for eye-trial prescreening

Published in Artificial Intelligence, Drugs development & discovery, Scanners and Imaging, Tools.

October 9, 2026 — Verana Health announced a partnership with Bitfount on October 8 to support prescreening for ophthalmology clinical trials by combining imaging analysis with electronic health record information.

At participating sites, the workflow assesses existing OCT or fundus images locally with AI, producing an imaging eligibility flag. That flag is displayed alongside eligibility criteria derived from health records in Verana’s trial-connect platform and Bitfount’s on-premise application.

The intended use is to compare available patient information against a study’s inclusion and exclusion criteria, helping sites identify potential participants before full trial screening. The collaboration also uses AI to process unstructured clinical notes.

Verana cites validation work with Moorfields Eye Hospital, but the announcement does not provide detailed numerical performance results. Claims of faster or more accurate prescreening therefore remain company-reported within this release.

Prescreening does not establish final trial eligibility or replace the study team’s assessment. The development illustrates how locally analyzed medical images can contribute to recruitment workflows without presenting the system as an autonomous diagnostic service.
