Magnetic millirobot pair demonstrates targeted cardiac drug-delivery concept in laboratory models

Published in Tech News, Tools.

Publication date: October 12, 2026.

Johns Hopkins University announced on October 12 a pair of magnetically guided millirobots designed for targeted drug delivery to heart tissue. The work appears in Advanced Materials Technologies and explores a possible future approach to treating endocarditis.

The system separates two jobs: a needle module attaches to tissue and provides a docking point, while a drug module carries medication, docks magnetically and releases it locally. An external electromagnetic coil system steers both modules without onboard batteries or motors. Keeping the docking module in place could allow replacement drug modules to deliver repeated doses.

The team tested the devices in phantom heart models and on porcine heart tissue, reporting autonomous movement against simulated blood flow. More realistic models incorporating contraction and beating motion are planned.

Evidence limits: This is a laboratory proof of concept, not demonstrated treatment in patients. The announcement does not establish that the robots cure infection, shorten antibiotic courses or replace heart surgery. Safe navigation, tissue attachment, delivery and clinical effectiveness still require further validation.
