Southern Research announces $8 million NIH grant for THRIVE drug-research validation hub

Published in Drugs development & discovery, Financial, Tools.

Publication date: October 12, 2026.

Southern Research announced on October 12 an US$8 million NIH grant to build THRIVE, the Translational Hub for Research, Innovation, Validation, and Excellence. The planned shared-use biomedical facility will support new approach methodologies: laboratory, computational and data-based methods intended to better reflect human biology and reduce reliance on animal studies in drug development.

The federal HHS TAGGS record independently confirms award C06OD042705 and its US$8 million construction funding. The recorded award action occurred on September 17, 2026, ahead of today’s public announcement; the performance period runs from September 18, 2026, through November 30, 2030.

THRIVE plans to provide human-relevant model systems, analytical capabilities and standardised workflows so researchers can compare and validate methods. Shared comparator datasets and metadata are also intended to support reproducibility and future AI or computational tools for predictive biology.

Evidence limits: The award funds research infrastructure. It does not establish that any specific model already predicts patient outcomes reliably, that animal testing can be eliminated across drug development, or that a new medicine has proved effective.
