CONNECT trial supports glucose monitoring in type 2 diabetes without insulin

A randomized trial adds evidence that continuous glucose monitoring can improve blood-sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes who do not use insulin. The CONNECT study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine on October 14, 2026.

Researchers enrolled 283 adults at 22 U.S. primary-care practices and compared monitoring with routine care over 26 weeks. Average HbA1c fell from 8.8% to 7.2% in the monitoring group, versus 8.7% to 8.0% in the comparison group. The adjusted difference was 0.9 percentage points in favor of monitoring.

Participants using the technology also spent 21 percentage points more time within the study’s glucose target of 70–180 mg/dL—approximately five additional hours per day. No severe hypoglycemia events were reported.

These findings support monitoring as a potential addition to care for this patient population. They do not demonstrate that the devices prevent long-term complications or benefit people without diabetes. The follow-up lasted six months, and Dexcom funded the trial; these details matter when interpreting the results.
