Postoperative app monitoring shows benefits when clinicians review patient reports

Research presented at the Anesthesiology 2026 meeting suggests that digital follow-up after surgery may be most useful when clinicians actively review patients’ reports. The American Society of Anesthesiologists described the findings in an October 17 release.

The analysis combined 38 studies involving 7,507 patients. Compared with standard postoperative care, app-based monitoring programs were associated with 22% lower relative risks of major complications and emergency-room visits, and a 15% lower relative risk of readmission.

However, overall complications did not decline significantly. The readmission benefit appeared only in programs where a clinician reviewed submitted information and could respond. Programs typically collected symptoms and wound information, sometimes supplemented by connected monitoring devices.

The findings point to the importance of staffing and response procedures alongside software. They are conference-reported results from varied programs, not proof that any particular app improves recovery. Relative reductions also do not reveal how many patients benefit without baseline event rates. Full methods and study-quality assessment remain important for interpreting the estimates.
