Molecular Mapping Reveals How Chitosan Organizes Cryptococcus Cell Walls

Published in Biology, Diseases!, Journals.

Published October 18, 2026.

A study published today in Nature Communications maps how chitosan helps organize the cell walls of two fungi associated with serious infections, including cryptococcal meningitis: Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii.

Using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance and structural analyses, researchers compared ordinary fungal strains with chitosan-deficient variants. They found a rigid framework of aggregated alpha-glucans associated with chitin, surrounded by a more mobile network of other sugars and proteins.

Chitosan influenced wall hydration and flexibility. Its absence changed cell shape and wall organization, with stronger defects in C. neoformans. The two species reorganized their wall components differently, showing that closely related pathogens can respond differently to the same structural change.

The work provides a molecular foundation for investigating fungal biology and potential preventive approaches. It does not establish an effective treatment or demonstrate vaccine protection in people. The journal currently presents an accepted, peer-reviewed early version that may receive further editorial changes.
