Chronic exercise leaves pathway-specific electrical signatures in the mouse hippocampus

Chronic treadmill exercise leaves a pathway-specific electrical signature in the mouse hippocampus, according to a study published today in Communications Biology.

Researchers recorded field potentials in anesthetized male C57BL/6J mice after an exercise protocol. Machine-learning analysis could distinguish experimental groups using activity associated with the lateral perforant path, relying on several features rather than one measurement.

Changes in two other examined generators, the Schaffer collateral and lacunosum-moleculare pathways, did not reach statistical significance. The results therefore support a localized effect rather than a uniform shift across hippocampal activity.

Exploratory spatial transcriptomics also found enrichment of calcium-signaling and long-term potentiation programs in the dentate gyrus.

The work connects exercise history with circuit and molecular measurements taken without active task performance. It does not show that the classifier measures memory ability, establishes an exercise prescription for people, or demonstrates the same signature in awake animals or females.
